Golden Mussels
All upper reservoirs along Highway 4 have boat launch restrictions. Launching is prohibited without certification that boats have been properly cleaned, drained, and dried.

Help Stop the Spread of the Golden Mussel in California Waters
California’s lakes and rivers are a cherished destination for boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and other water recreation activities. As watercraft activity increases, so does the risk of spreading aquatic invasive species, particularly the newly detected Golden Mussel.
What Is the Golden Mussel?
The Golden Mussel is a rapidly spreading invasive species recently found in California. It poses a serious threat by clogging water infrastructure, disrupting native ecosystems, and being extremely difficult to remove once established.
Prevent the Spread: Clean, Drain, and Dry
To protect our waterways, everyone using watercraft or water gear should follow these simple but critical steps:
- Clean all watercraft, gear, and equipment. Remove any plants, mud, or debris.
- Drain all water from bilges, tanks, and equipment before leaving the launch site.
- Dry all items completely, ideally for at least 5 days before entering another body of water.
These steps help prevent the spread of invasive species from one water body to another.
