Flushing to occur within the Jenny Lind Water Distribution | February, 2022 - January 31, 2022

Calaveras County Water District Field Staff will be flushing the water Distribution System beginning February 2022

The Calaveras County Water District (CCWD) will be flushing the Jenny Lind Water Distribution System (Distribution System) beginning Wednesday February 2nd. The flushing effort will continue for the next eight to ten weeks. Routine flushing of the water Distribution System is an effective way to accomplish multiple water supply related objectives. It improves water quality by removing naturally occurring minerals (in this case mostly manganese and total organic carbon) that can collect on the bottom of water mains and laterals, it provides an understanding of water supply, flow, and pressure under different operating conditions, it allows Staff to exercise valves and operate appurtenances thereby improving their reliability, and it provides critical operational information to the District’s Engineering Department. These recognized benefits allow for cost effective and efficient changes to operational efforts and to the design of system improvements.

CCWD is pointedly aware that California is in the midst of a drought. The District is currently in Water Shortage Stage 1 of its Water Shortage Contingency Plan. Water Shortage Stage 1 is an Advisory Stage and calls for voluntary reductions in water use. CCWD has routinely flushed the Jenny Lind Water Distribution System over the last twenty years. The District will use the knowledge and experience gained through previous flushing efforts to inform and optimize the work effort to use as little water as possible.

Residents can expect to see signs posted ahead of the work effort along streets in Rancho Calaveras and La Contenta alerting them to the work effort. Traffic impacts will be minimal.

CCWD appreciates your understanding that routine flushing of water Distribution Systems is an example of responsible stewardship of a community asset.
